Abstract

Moderation (اعتدال) which is virtue of justice, of balance, and of temperance, is the perfect social order that would guarantee human well-being through avoiding overindulgence and underindulgence. Islam is also a full-fledged, moderate system of life, which demands equity in all aspects: doctrine, worship, economy, society, and politics, and is combined under one ethical-moderate paradigm. In contrast to religions, which are closed to rituals, Islam is a practical code of conduct, covering belief, devotions, and economy, social ties, government, rights of husbands and wives, father relations with his children and subjects, and relations among individuals. This paper will take a systematic look at moderate teachings of Islam and through the support of verses in the Quran, the traditions of the Prophet and the life of the exemplary Prophet Muhammad, (PBUH). It clarifies moderating values of faith (عقائد), worship (عبادہ), economic justice, social peace, political justice, reciprocal marital relationships, family obligations and civic relationships, which imprints the general paradigm of wasatiyyah (moderation) within the framework of Islam as the basis of human prosperity.
