Abstract

The scholars who pursued different scholarly pursuits in Islamic history are given different names and titles. The scholars who enlightened themselves with Quran were called Qari, and those who acquired expertise in Hadith were called Muhaditheen, the ones who acquired the knowledge of speaking were called Mutakalimeen, and the ones who learnt philosophy were called philosophers. Similarly, the scholars who achieved excellence in Islamic jurisprudence were called Jurists and within these jurists the scholars who strived to find solutions to the newly emerging problems were called Al-Rai. Meanwhile, one other group also emerged who used to put their own arguments and ignore Quran and Hadith. This group was also called Al Rai. Therefore, two group existed in the Al Rai, one which was righteous and the other which was not righteous. Subsequently, both the groups were criticized without any discrimination and the same misunderstanding exists even today as well. Therefore, it is the need of the time to discriminate between these two groups and let the Al Rai be given its proper status. This research article strives to prove the fact that Al Rai were basically eminent Islamic scholars who use to struggle to find solutions to the problems of the Muslim Ummah in the light of Quran and Sunnah..
